While You Were Sleeping 1995 film is rated PG 4 Hearts and 4 Chocolates
The comedy stars Sandra Bullock and Bill Pullman, screenwriters Daniel G. Sullivan and Fredric Lebow, director Jon T. Metellaub. This sweet and funny film is for daydreamers who yearn for something more in their life. Sandra Bullock plays a woman who has a dead-end job at a tollbooth. Every day she sees a handsome attorney and fantasizes what it would be like to have a relationship with him. When he is attacked by thugs, she rescues him. Unconscious, he is taken to the hospital. She comes to see him and is mistakenly identified as his fiancé. From then on complications multiply. This film made me smile. It’s the kind of film that leaves you feeling better for having seen it.
One Fine Day 1996, PG rated – 4 Hearts and 3 Chocolates
Stars Michelle Pfeiffer, George Clooney, writers, Terrel Seltzer and Ellen Simon, directed by Michael Hoffman. Charming, fun and it’s great to look at a young Clooney. This film follows the day in the life of two single parents as they struggle to balance work and parenting. Though they barely know each other, when everything goes wrong, they must work together to keep their careers going, keep the kids occupied and safe—romance ensures. The kids are charming. I laughed remembering all the mischief my kids got into when they were young, just to satisfy their curiosity.
Sleeping with the Enemy 1991 Rated R – 3 Hearts and 2 Chocolates
The film stars Julia Roberts, Patrick Bergin, writers, Nancy Price (novel), Ronald Bass (screenplay). Story: A woman fakes her death to get away from an abusive husband and start a new life. It seems to work and she is feeling safe and even begins a new relationship when…this is one scary and romantic at the same time. Julia is at her most beautiful.
It does have sweet moments, but because of the intense relationship with the ex-husband I couldn’t give more chocolates. If you’re looking for tension and suspense with your romance this movie is for you.
You’ve Got Mail 1998 PG – 4 Hearts and 4 Chocolates
This sweet comedy stars Tom Hanks and Meg Ryan. Writers, Miklos Laszlo, (play) Nora Ephron, Delia Ephron (screenplay) and Nora Ephron directed. She also directed Hanks and Ryan in Sleepless in Seattle.
Rivals in business, they court each other using a pseudonym via email and without knowing they are competitors. Though it may seem dated now because we take our cell phones and tablets for granted, Tom Hanks and Meg Ryan are a joy to watch as they learn what it’s like to adjust to life and romance in the electronic age.
The Best Years of Our Lives – 4 Hearts and 2 Chocolates
One of the best written films ever presented. You’ll forget it’s in black and white and get lost in the characters and their goals.
It stars Myrna Loy, Fredric March, Dana Andrews, Teresa Wright and Harold Russell. Screenplay Robert E. Sherwood, novel Mackinlay Kantor.
The heartwarming story of World War Two GIs who must transition from war to civilian life and again learn to be a part of the families they left behind. Russell, an actual double amputee, won an academy award for his portrait of a returning World War Two amputee. The film is worth seeing just for the scene in his bedroom with his girlfriend. Don’t get me wrong it’s not the only reason to watch. All the characters seem so real it is easy to feel we are there peeking into their lives. I’d be very surprised if this film doesn’t make you cry and want to hug your sweetheart.
